Counseling Before You Become Pregnant

Our tests can help you determine your risk of miscarriage, birth defects and genetic abnormalities before you begin your family

If a genetic condition such as cystic fibrosis runs in your family, you have a history of miscarriage or other problem pregnancies, or you have a health condition that may complicate pregnancy, consider making an appointment with a maternal fetal medicine specialist for preconception counseling. Our maternal fetal medicine specialists (doctors who specialize in complicated pregnancies), genetic counselors and staff will recommend tests that can help you to determine your risk—before conception—of having a baby with a birth defect or genetic abnormality, or of experiencing a problem in pregnancy. If you have diabetes, heart disease, or another medical problem, they also can help you to better manage your health so you stay healthy during pregnancy.

Preconception counseling services include:
  • Testing to determine whether you carry specific genes that can cause cystic fibrosis, Tay-sachs disease, and other genetic conditions
  • Meeting with a registered dietitian to improve your diet before you become pregnant
  • Assessing what may have gone wrong in your previous pregnancies
  • Meeting with a maternal fetal medicine specialist, endocrinologist, or another specialist to improve your health before you become pregnant.
